LASIK Success Rates Patients Love the Results
What LASIK Can Correct
Nearsightedness
Objects nearby are clear but those farther away are blurry. Nearsightedness (myopia) is caused by a longer eyeball than normal or a cornea that is too curved.
Farsightedness
Far away objects appear clearer than close objects. Farsightedness (hyperopia) occurs when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is not sufficiently curved.
Astigmatism
Roughly one-third of people have astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is more steeply curved in one direction than the other, causing overall blurred vision.
The Benefits of LASIK Surgery
Nearly Instant Improvement
LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) can be performed in a matter of minutes and patients often In situ keratomileusis) note an immediate improvement in their vision. However, it can take up to six months for your vision to fully stabilize.
Crystal Clear Vision
After treatment, you should see such an improvement in your vision that you can enjoy a significantly reduced or completely eliminated dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
Better Quality of Life
The freedom achieved after LASIK surgery allows patients to enjoy certain activities more easily without having to worry about corrective eyewear. This can drastically enhance your overall quality of life.
There's Nothing to Fear
We Ensure Your Comfort
Many patients are apprehensive about undergoing LASIK eye surgery (laser in situ keratomileusis). This can be due to a combination fear of pain or anxiety about anybody touching your eye, let alone performing surgery on it. However, numbing eye drops and a sedative are provided to minimize discomfort and allow you to relax in one of our comfortable operative chairs. Additionally, LASIK is considered to be very safe, especially when performed by experienced and board-certified ophthalmologists like Dr. Gross and Dr. Nelson.

How Does LASIK Work?
Common vision problems are usually caused by misshapen corneas. When the cornea is not the ideal shape, it refracts light improperly, resulting in blurred vision.
LASIK surgery uses a laser to reshape the cornea. By precisely sculpting the corneal tissue, Dr. Gross and Dr. Nelson can correct your refractive errors and give you 20/20 vision or better.

LASIK Requirements
Over 21
Patients under 21 are not permitted to undergo LASIK surgery for safety reasons.
Sufficient Corneal Thickness
If you have only a thin layer of corneal tissue, it may be safer to opt for PRK surgery or LASEK instead.
Generally Healthy
Certain conditions such as autoimmune diseases, HIV, or poorly controlled diabetes may disqualify you as a candidate for surgical vision correction.
Stable Vision
If you have needed a change in your glasses or contact lens prescription in the last year, LASIK is typically not recommended.
Not Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Since vision fluctuations can occur during pregnancy and throughout breastfeeding, you should wait about three to six months to undergo LASIK.

I kind of knew what to expect going into surgery, but Dr Gross walked through each step, which helps a ton. I still can't believe I don't need glasses and I've been telling everyone to go to him. I would do it 100x over with Dr Gross! Thank you!
View on GoogleBefore and After LASIK What You Should Know
Before Surgery
Although LASIK is a relatively simple surgery, there are a number of measures you will still need to take to ensure the best results possible. You will need to stop wearing contact lenses in the weeks leading up to your LASIK procedure. These corrective lenses change the shape of your cornea, which can interfere with your results.
Before having LASIK eye surgery, you should arrange to have someone drive you to and from the medical facility.
Dr. Gross recommends that patients refrain from using lotions, makeup, and perfumes the day before their surgery.
After Surgery
After surgery, you may experience discomfort, haziness, itching, and watering. A mild pain reliever may be taken to help ease irritation, and we usually prescribe eye drops to help prevent infection and inflammation.
It is important to avoid rubbing your eyes as this may damage your corneal flap.
Your eyesight should dramatically improve within 24 hours of treatment. In fact, most patients are able to resume activities with minimal restrictions the next day. Your vision will continue to improve over the next few months.
Bladeless LASIK Surgery
Bladeless LASIK is another option for refractive eye care surgery. While traditional LASIK consistently leaves the vast majority of patients overwhelmingly satisfied, bladeless LASIK can be the better option in some cases.
The key difference between the two procedures is the tool used to create the flap in the cornea. For traditional LASIK, the flap is made with a specialized bladed instrument. When we conduct bladeless LASIK, we use an IntraLase laser to create the flap. Knowing there will be no blade near any part of their eye puts many patients more at ease. Bladeless also offers other advantages over traditional LASIK.

PRK vs. LASIK
Some patients are not good candidates for LASIK because their corneas are too thin. If that is your situation, we may recommend you consider PRK surgery as an alternative. Our practice serving Greater Merrillville can provide this safe and effective refractive surgery for the right candidates.
PRK is another refractive surgery that predates LASIK. Like LASIK, PRK uses a laser to reshape your cornea. Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve the creation of a corneal flap. Rather, our surgeons will remove the outer layer of the cornea entirely so that the laser can access the internal corneal tissue.
Because PRK does not involve a corneal flap, it actually has a lower risk of complication than LASIK. However, because the eye needs to grow back the outer layer of the cornea, the recovery period is longer with PRK.
Patients with especially active lifestyles often prefer PRK. This is because there is no risk of flap complications that might occur in some activities, such as contact sports.
Intraocular Lenses A LASIK Alternative for Severe Refractive Errors
If you have an especially high degree of refractive error, solutions like LASIK and PRK may not be able to provide the results you need. Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are an option that can provide greater freedom from glasses and contact lenses for those who are not eligible for other vision enhancement procedures. These synthetic lenses are designed to replace the crystalline lens, which lays behind the iris and helps to focus incoming light onto the retina. IOLs are most commonly associated with cataract surgery, but could also be an excellent way for anyone suffering with severe nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism to minimize their need for corrective eyewear.

We Can Recommend the Right Refractive Surgery for You
If you want to reduce or eliminate your need for glasses and contact lenses, we can recommend the best solution based on your corneal thickness, lifestyle, and other important factors. We invite you to book a free consultation with our ophthalmologists serving the greater Merrillville, IN, area.
LASIK FAQ
What are the risks of LASIK surgery?
LASIK has an exceptionally low complication rate of less than 1%. However, like any surgical procedure, LASIK does have risks, many of which are temporary, including dry eye and glares or halos. In some cases, flap complications or vision loss may occur.
Does insurance cover LASIK?
No. Because LASIK is considered an elective procedure, basic insurance does not contribute to the cost. That's why we accept 0% interest financing options through CareCredit.
How much downtime is required after LASIK?
Many Merrillville and Hobart LASIK patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision after LASIK, but it is important to understand that your eyes are still healing. You will need to avoid all strenuous activity following LASIK for one to two weeks. During periodic follow-up visits, we will determine when it is safe to resume strenuous activity.
When will I be able to drive again?
It depends entirely on the individual. Some patients may be cleared to drive as soon as the day after surgery, while others may need more time. We will carefully assess your vision beginning with a follow-up appointment the day after surgery to determine when it is safe for you to resume driving.
How long will my results last?
Although you can expect to experience the benefits of LASIK for many years after your surgery, your body will continue to age, which will involve the gradual decline of your vision. After having LASIK, when you begin to notice unwanted changes in your vision, you and Dr. Gross can discuss options such as a touch-up LASIK procedure or other solutions to give you the best possible focus.
Why should I choose Deen-Gross Eye Centers?
There are many practices offering too-good-to-be-true deals on LASIK, but it pays to choose a practice that can perform the procedure in maximum safety, with an absolutely minimized degree of risk. Our doctors have performed more than 30,000 refractive surgeries. Since establishing our practice, we have been leaders in adopting and implementing the latest technology. Deen-Gross has what it takes to help you achieve the best possible results of LASIK.
